Top Ten Movies Men Are Allowed To Cry To

movies-make-men-cryRecently, I had written a post on my blog about how to avoid crying at tear-jerkers in front of your girlfriend and it got me thinking that although it is not favorable to sob like a man child to movies with your girlfriend in the room; it is perfectly acceptable for men to watch certain scenes and tearjerkers that get them all misty-eyed.  (We’re human and not robots after all.)

When men cry, it’s not to some predictable and sappy chick flick based off a Nicholas Sparks novel, but rather it is a movie that moved us in a real way.

I can’t speak for all men, but here are some movies I think that is totally acceptable (if not expected) to shed some tears for:

10.  The Dark Knight

If you were like me, then tears came to your eyes as soon as you heard Hans Zimmer’s iconic score booming in the theatres.  Also, the part where a hospitalized Harvey Dent finds out that his fiancée is dead, I always cry like a bitch as soon as the score silences his screams of sorrow and agony.

9. The Lion King

I know some of you may feel like mocking me for putting a DISNEY movie on this list, but no one can deny that The Lion King is one of the saddest cartoons ever made.  Growing up without a father is something many guys can identify with and watching Simba accept his father in his spirit always induces tears.

8. Field of Dreams

I’m sorry, but if you don’t know why this movie makes most men cry, then you do not deserve an explanation.  I have literally turned down women’s’ advances if they have admitted to not wanting to watch this classic film. By far Kevin Costner’s best performance to date.

  1. 500 Days of Summer

500 Days of Summer is a relationship movie made to hit men in the balls for every guy can identify with dating someone slightly out of reach emotionally and being in love with someone who simply didn’t feel the same way for them.  One girl can definitely change your life for the better and worse and this movie really showcased that.

6. E.T

Seriously, I stop watching the movie when E.T. turns from brown to white.  I know he survives, but watching the scene where he is dying always bring out the misty-eyed 5 year old in me.

5. Carlito’s Way

Forget Scarface! Al Pacino’s portrayal of the likable former criminal is mesmerizing.  Despite the fact that they show his death at the beginning of the film, it doesn’t make it easier to watch by the end.

4.Saving Private Ryan

The second the elderly character, Ryan utters the words, “Am I a good man? Tell me I’m a good man,” I cry like a kid that skinned his knee in the schoolyard.  It just reminds you how much of a sacrifice soldiers made for our liberty back in WW2.

3. Jerry Maguire

No, I’m not going to mention the nauseating “You Complete Me” speech.  The scene that makes me cry is when Rod comes out of the victorious football game and hugs Jerry. As soon as Jerry points to Rod, I need the Kleenex.

2. The Shawshank Redemption

Seriously, who doesn’t cry (man or woman) when seeing Andy being reunited with Red on the beach at the end of this film?  If you don’t cry, then you don’t have a soul. Nuff said.

1. Malcolm X

Despite the fact this man was maybe too outspoken and the fact the film is over 4 hours long, it doesn’t make the depiction of Malcolm’s assassination any less tragic.  A truly moving biopic that reminds us how far we have come.

So what are some of yours that top your list?  Share with me so I don’t feel like a raging cry baby! ;)

Lol. I have yet to see #2 and #4 on your list, probably because of their length. An unexpected movie that made me cry was "Click" with Adam Sandler, it was so sad at the end!! I def. have to check out 500 days of Summer as well.
